The Needles are the symbol that most people instantly associate with the Isle of Wight. They are a series of three massive rocks that rise high out of the sea in a line, at the end of which lies a red and white-stripped lighthouse. The Needles are located at the Western point of the island around Alum Bay. The Alum Bay area is also famous in its own right for its amazing multi-coloured sand.
Cowes at the northern tip of the island has a long association with sailing. It is from here that the world famous yachting regatta Cowes Week occurs, held every year in the first week of August. During Cowes Week the area enjoys a party like atmosphere and most other summer weekends there’s also plenty of sailing activity to be seen.
Originally designed to be used only as a summer retreat by the royal family, Osborne House was in fact used as a permanent residence by Queen Victoria after the loss of her beloved husband Albert. Nowadays visitors can enjoy the splendour of this great house and view the Royal Apartments and collection of Indian treasures. You can also indulge in horse drawn carriage rides and enjoy walks in the both the Victorian Walled Garden and Terrace Garden.
Take a romantic trip back in time to the heyday of steam with the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. Your journey can either commence from Havenstreet Station or Smallbrook Junction, from where you’ll be transported in style through the island’s picturesque countryside in painstakingly restored original Victorian and Edwardian carriages.
Carisbrook Castle is located in the island’s capital of Newport and is surrounded by a hilltop fortress. The medieval castle is most famous for being the place where Charles I was kept prisoner before his execution. It was also home to Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter, Princess Beatrice. No longer used as a royal residence the castle now houses a museum outlining details of its historic past.
The Isle of Wight is famous for its dinosaur remains so it’s not surprising to find a couple of dinosaur attractions in the area. The Dinosaur Farm Museum is situated in the Brighstone area, the area where the biggest dinosaur finds were discovered on the island. The museum helps visitors understand about what life was like for dinosaurs on the Isle of Wight and to learn about how prehistoric remains are carefully excavated. Meanwhile at Dinosaur Isle in Sandown, guests are treated to life-size dinosaur skeletons, models and over 1000 fossils and dinosaur relics.
The Flamingo Park Wildlife Encounter is one of the Isle of Wight’s award winning attractions and it’s easy to see why. The flamingos are indeed the main attraction but there’s also plenty more besides including: penguins, peacocks, owls, pelicans and beavers to name but a few. Visitors are also allowed to feed many of the animals and every care is taken to ensure the animals here are well looked after.
Blackgang
Chine has been a cliff top park
attracting countless visitors each year since Victorian times.
Over the years the attractions on the site have grown so that
today you can visit animated shows such as The Crooked House
and Smuggler’s Cave, followed by themed areas such as
Nurseryland and Fantasyland. There’s also a 100-metre
Water-Force boat slide for those that enjoy white knuckle
rides.
